My visit to the Kahului DMV was wonderful. There is person just inside the door who helps you get your number and understand the procedures. I was there to renew my drivers license. It took all of 20 minutes. Everyone there was friendly and knowledgeable. For once a government service office that has its act together.
I've had to go back on 3 occasions for a truck that they mislabeled as a commercial vehicle just because Matson labeled it as such due to its accessories (I.e work lights, aftermarket bumber, etc.) when shipped from mainland. I had to pay a whopping $576! Just because it's commercially labeled and it's use was for just commuting back and forth to work, ridiculous! I had learned from the safety inspection place that they should have given me an option to be exempt from department of transportation but it seems like the employees are poorly trained and their knowledge of vehicles are just as bad as their customer service..... very long wait times, lots of incompetent people that only process you like a number and don't treat you like people.
I recently was in the process to get my license back ... did the road test ... the man was rude gave me wrong directions from the get go told me and pointed where he wanted me to exit the parking lot then while in motion makes me change directions . Secondly when we were finished he proceeded to lecture me on my dui from 3 years ago ... which I found totally inappropriate and unprofessional . I was in tears when he brought it up because I finally thought you know everything is done all my requirements filled which was a process in itself and was torture ... I paid all my fines dealt with the court so I don't see why he had any right to even bring it up and lecture me on it ... I'm really hurt and am going to a different office because I never wanna see his face again ... horrible ....

If you go there between 10-2 you will wait forever as everyone takes their lunch.
