These people are straight up running an illegal company. They have no business front so they had us do the vehicle exchange in a random parking lot. Jeep was in bad shape-smelled, non functioning seat belts, rusted all over, floor boards got so hot while driving that you couldn't keep your feet on the ground. We got pulled over half way across the island and were told by the police that the vehicle hadn't been registered in years- we were slammed with tickets and our calls were ignored by rent a jeep. Not to mention the fact that nearly every single check engine light was on in the car, which they attempted to conceal with electric tape. THIS IS A SCAM. The cheap prices aren't worth the tickets you'll get and safety hazards in this car. These people should be locked up.
I understand that it is hard to get the red dirt out of the vehicles on Maui but this was disgusting. The building is a shack. They have severely neglected dogs around the place that will break your heart. The radio was old and only has a tape player. Kiss buying a road to Hana Guide CD goodbye. The first Jeep they tried to set us up with had major suspension problems. The check engine light was on but that was not the point. The point was that they used electrical tape to try to hide it. We had to exchange it. None of the jeep had sides so be sure to hike with all of your valuables. On the way to Haleakala the head lights went out. It was 3 am in the morning, pitch black and there are very few side railings on the roads leading up to the summit. Over all worst part was the smell of the seats. I really recommend paying the extra cash for a safe and clean Jeep. Plus the guy who drove us back to the airport reeked of alcohol. These people should not be in business.
We stayed for a week on Maui, and got a great price on our Jeep. Ran like a champ and went everywhere we wanted to go. We wanted a manual transmission, but they are impossible to get ahold of, even when you book your reservation 3 months out. The jeeps are old, but as long as you have some mechanical know how, and do a "walk around" when you get your jeep to make sure everything works, you will love it. Make sure the radio works, turn signals, headlights, windshield wipers, drivelines and tires are in good condition and you're on your way. My girlfriend and I both were raised on farms, so an old but dependable, tough and rusty rig with no gymics was we were used to. Even when we were made aware the jeep had incorrect tags, the owner quickly replaced our Jeep with another one without any delay so we could be on our way. David is a great guy, and did his best to accommodate our needs, even though he wasn't feeling well. My girlfriend loved our Jeep so much she wanted me to try to buy it from him. Lol. Best of all the jeeps already have dents and scratches so don't have to worry about the paint. But if you expect a perfect vehicle with all the luxuries of a Lexus, then you need to rent a Lexus. But if you travel the road to Hana, you might get stuck and be wishing you had a 4x4. There are a couple places the creeks will overflow the road if raining so you need something that sits up off the ground, or you might be a traveling swimming pool! And be sure to fuel before you go to Hana, because gas there is high. But it is beautiful there, just take the corners slow and don't get too close to the edge, as guardrail isn't plentiful, and its a long ways to the bottom. The volcano was a great place to go as well, although you don't hear about it at all. It's off of highway 377, & you can drive all the way to the peak at 10,300 ft! Lots of hiking trails to the actual craters, and great camping down by the ranger station.You can overlook all of Maui on a clear day, so cool.
Bottom line: great island, great scenery, great vacation, and a great rental experience. Would totally do it all again! Mahalo!
I HAD THE BEST TIME IN MY JEEP. THE JEEP WAS OPEN AIR BUT THE SIDE WINDOWS WERE IN THE JEEP IF WE NEEDED TO ENCLOSE IT. WE LOVED THE LOW PRICE OF THE RENTAL AND WOULD RECOMMEND THEM TO ALL OF OUR FRIENDS. THEY DOGS WERE GREAT WITH NO SIGNS OF NEGLECT VERY WELL FEED. THE PLACE WAS NOT MUCH TO LOOK AT, BUT THE VEHICLE WAS WORTH IT!!!! MAUI IS A BEAUTIFUL ISLAND AND THE JEEP MADE THE TRIP!!
