Best price I was able to find on Maui! The cars are a little older then what you would rent from the big corporate guys, but the savings was worth it to me and my family. Staff was friendly and helpful. If we make it to the island again we will come back to Aloha Rent a Car.
Aloha's prices are good, but you quickly realize why once you see the cars and get to drive them. The biggest problem is their mechanical condition. The first car we got (a van) had wheels so badly misaligned that it was unsafe to drive and we had to return it on the next day. In addition, the brakes were probably worn out so they started smelling after just short downhill rides where frequent braking is required.
Thanks god I was lucky and the car didn't break down with me. I can't imagine the trouble that it would give me.
I also had a problem that I never had in other car rental companies: my credit card covers the collision insurance and I wanted them to put a hold in it and then switch the card upon return. They demanded the full payment made with a credit card in advance for me to get the vehicle.
The rental contract is a joke. Its an old car with more than 60000 miles and I would be responsible for any mechanical damage that occurs in Hana, Haleakala summit, east side of Maui island, or the west Maui road after kappalua. I just didn't change the car rental company after reading the contract because my card would be charged anyway, since I didn't cancel the reservation two days before arrival.
The summary is: you get what you pay for.
BEAWARE! Old and OUT DATED cars with false advertisement and ROACHES! They don't tell you about the Cancellation fee AND they lie when they say they hold a 20% hold on your reservation! As I was picked up from the airport I noticed the CHECK-ENGINE light and TIRE PRESSURE light on in the SHUTTLE VAN they picked me up in! I thought, ohh-it'll be fine. UNTIL I drove away in my rental car and noticed the TIRE PRESSURE light on and my car shaking as I drove away. I was scared for my life. It was then as I noticed light brown roaches crawling on the dash board. I quickly turned around and drove back to the office. The short-fat rental agent with long hair was a terrible rental agent. No compassion at all. I felt as if she was upset having to help me as a customer. 2 thumbs DOWN on this car rental agency!
In Oahu I rented a car with a big car rental company and didn't have any kind of problem. Plus the rate was better, the car was way newer/ clean/ not smelly.
I reserved an new station wagon and got a very used car that was not even clean. The car also smelled, it seemed like they never cleaned it.
This is a used car rental agency. We looked at 4 cars and all had 80+ thousand miles on them, noisy engines, bad brakes, dirty inside, etc. Budget had new cars for less money, so we rented there. Aloha had good customer service and gave us a refund and a ride back to the airport.
Another you should beware of is also the external condition. The cars have a large amount of small bumps and scratches everywhere - accounting for all of them is quite difficult.
I suggest you guys to do the same. Reserve a car in advance and with a big company. You will get a good rate and avoid trouble.
